This year we have a
hard-working group of people working together to organize a varied
program of adult education at Montebello Jewish Center! We hope to
provide our community a chance to improve synagogue skills, increase
knowledge and appreciation of our Jewish heritage, including shows,
movies, walking tours, a book club, cooking demonstrations as well as
classes on several subjects. Many of these programs will take place at MJC, others will involve adventures at other locations.
Take a look below at the courses we have planned! The cost of joining the Adult Ed program for the
year is minimal: $36 pays for as many classes as you like. If two or
more members of the same family participate, second and subsequent
participants cost only $18. Some courses will have an extra materials
fee which will be specified in their description. People who have joined
the Adult Ed program will also receive a discount on special events such
as shows or away trips.
Advance registration for classes is required.
Register by E-mail to Pearl Schachner at
PearlSch@verizon.net or by phone to Pearl at
(845)-368-2863. Let us know which classes or programs you plan to attend. Mail your
checks to Montebello Jewish Center, attention to Adult Ed.
Many thanks to the committee: Lester Goldstein,
Karen Lefkowitz, Harriet Dank, Richard Weinberger, Vicki Blatt, Eileen
Schwartz, Joseph Schachner. And, thank you to the people who volunteered
their time to be teachers!
It is our hope that you participate and enjoy in as
many of these wonderful Classes and Events as possible!
Sincerely,
Pearl Schachner

Come see a Jewish – relevant movie on a Saturday night, and have a
little coffee and cake and discussion after the movie:
 |
“Saved by Deportation: An Unknown Odyssey of
Polish Jews” Sponsored by Sisterhood: Saturday January 17th
2009, 7:30PM.
Synopsis: In 1940, a year before the Nazis started deporting Jews to
death camps, Joseph Stalin ordered the deportation of approximately
200,000 Polish Jews from Russian-occupied Eastern Poland to forced labor
settlements in the Soviet interior. As cruel as Stalin's deportations
were, ultimately they largely saved Jewish lives, for the deportees
constituted the overwhelming majority of Polish Jews who escaped the
Nazi Holocaust. "Saved by Deportation" not only tells this story, but it
re-traces the path Asher and Shyfra Scharf traveled more than 60 years
ago from Poland to Siberia to the former Soviet states of Tajikistan and
Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It is in those largely Muslim societies, in
the cities of Kuhjand, Jeezax and Samarkand, that the film demonstrates
a remarkable spirit as the Scharfs are welcomed by the locals who recall
fondly the sojourn of Polish refugees in their midst. This little-known
story of survival is both a harrowing adventure and an affirmation of
human goodness during a time of great darkness.

“The Band's Visit” - A Cannes film festival award winner!
Sponsored by Sisterhood: February 7th 2009, 7:30 PM.
Synopsis: Once, not long ago, a small Egyptian Police band arrived in
Israel. They came to play at an initiation ceremony but, due to
bureaucracy, bad luck, or for whatever reason, they were left stranded
at the airport. They tried to manage on their own, only to find
themselves in a desolate, almost forgotten, small Israeli town,
somewhere in the heart of the desert. A lost band in a lost town. Not
many people remember this ... it wasn't that important...
